ARTIST PROFILE: E. Landseer Harris (1858–1901) was a distinguished 19th-century American painter born in Rochester, New York, to artist James Harris and his wife, Mary. Though he was the son of an artist, Harris was primarily self-taught, with his obituary famously noting that his "only teacher has been Nature". Throughout a career that took him to cities such as Cleveland, Buffalo, and Boston, he became known for his evocative, impressionistic landscapes and scenes, including works like Boats at Dusk and Dutch Village Scene. His artistic legacy is cemented by the inclusion of his painting Landscape with Windmill in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Harris passed away in 1901 and was laid to rest in Rochester’s Mount Hope Cemetery.
