ARTIST PROFILE: Walter DuBois Richards (1907–2006), affectionately known as "Wally," was a prolific commercial illustrator and artist whose career spanned seven decades. After graduating from the Cleveland School of Art and moving to New York in 1936, he became a highly sought-after draftsman and watercolorist, completing global assignments for Life magazine, the U.S. Air Force, and major corporations. His artistic legacy includes the design of 37 U.S. postage stamps—including a notable series on national architectural treasures—and his paintings are held in prestigious permanent collections such as the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Pentagon. From his earliest high school yearbook doodles in the 1920s to his final published stamp in 1987, Richards remained a dedicated chronicler of American life and architecture.
