ARTIST PROFILE: William S. Green was a 20th-century artist and educator born in Central City, Colorado, who developed a deep love for the Rocky Mountain landscape. Educated in Trinidad and Denver Public Schools, he showed an early talent and interest in art, and went on to earn degrees from Purdue University and the University of Denver. He built a career in education, teaching science in Denver, serving as principal of the high school in Lafayette, Colorado, and later as Superintendent of Schools in Big Piney, Wyoming. Despite his professional life in education, Green remained a dedicated painter throughout his life. His landscapes gradually developed a distinctive atmospheric quality rooted in Impressionism, which was regarded as both convincing and sincere. He had a particular fondness for painting the Colorado Rockies, capturing iconic scenes such as Horseshoe Park in Rocky Mountain National Park, and went on to serve as president of the Denver Artists' Guild from 1962 to 1963, where he chaired exhibitions and showed his work for many years.
